Hyderabad: The Telangana Congress is making all out efforts to see that the party regains its lost glory and emerges as an effective Opposition. The party, which got a boost after the visit of its AICC vice president Rahul Gandhi to take part in Rythu Bharosa Yatra in Nirmal, is now trying hard to invite AICC chief Sonia Gandhi for making it grand on the first anniversary of Telangana Formation Day.

They are reportedly planning to organise a ‘symposium’ in Hyderabad on June 2, and want Sonia Gandhi to deliver the keynote address.According to party sources, the Congress will be inviting intellectuals, professors and civil society groups who fought for Telangana for the symposium and will discuss the promises made by the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) before coming to power and how the government has completely changed its priorities in last one year.

At least six prominent personalities, who will not be politicians, but from various other fields including economists, will speak on June 2. The party expects that about 4,000 to 5,000 people would participate in the symposium. According to party sources the Congress feels that there is no point in indulging in plain rhetoric and lashing at the government. Instead, the party should play a constructive role and show the mirror to the government by highlighting what it had promised and where it had failed.

The TPCC feels that even organising a massive public meeting will be of no use. A symposium addressed by the cream of society should work as an eye-opener for the government, the sources said. The symposium will help the intelligentsia to comprehend where the State is going. “The speakers themselves will raise questions on the governance, rather the Opposition party criticising the government,” said a senior leader.

Each time the State party leaders visit New Delhi, they are putting in maximum efforts to ensure that Congress chief gives her nod to attend the symposium. Even as the party leaders maintained that it was Sonia Gandhi who was responsible for the formation of Telangana, the State leadership could not reap dividends during the last one year.

After Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Nirmal drawing national attention, the State leadership is considering the Telangana Formation Day as an opportunity to restore the party’s past glory. If AICC chief visits Telangana, the Congress can draw more credit for formation of Telangana than its rival party, the TRS, feels party leaders.
