8 kg gold smuggling case

Hyderabad: A total of five persons, including two alleged smugglers were taken into custody by Director of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in 8-kg gold smuggling case that was unearthed on Monday at the RGIA Airport. They are being interrogated at the DRI City office and officials feel that these arrests could unravel a major smuggling racket in the days to come.

Even though the DRI officials maintained distance from the media, it is believed that the employees of GMR, who were taken into custody may spill the beans which could lead to more arrests. Meanwhile the management of GMR, which had expressed shock over alleged involvement of its staff, terminated the two employees Bhaskar Reddy and Rami Naidu from their services.

“It’s an unfortunate incident , two airport staff have been arrested by DRI in connection with their alleged involvement in movement of contraband (gold). On receiving the information from the agency, the airport authorities immediately acted and terminated their services. GMR Group strongly condemns such unlawful and unethical acts. The Company has already initiated an internal enquiry into the incident.

The company has also assured DRI of its full cooperation to investigate the case. Both the accused are presently under DRI custody,” said a GMR official. With frequent cases of gold smuggling coming the light, the officials who broke the nexus between the smugglers and staff working at Shamshabad Airport, are trying to unearth the entire network spread across major cities in South India, including Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad.

On interrogation, the arrested passengers revealed that the two staff members of GMR were helping in smuggling. “These two officials got Rs 20 Lakh in various forms for helping the smooth process of illegal transportation of goods,” the officials claimed. Both Bhaskar Reddy and Ram Naidu accepted their involvement in the investigation. The identity of the fifth arrested person has not been revealed.
