Top seed Novak Djokovic survived a worrying injury scare to reach the third round with a 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 win over Gilles Muller of Luxemburg. It was Djokovic’s 24th consecutive win this year as he took another step towards a first ever Roland Garros title and a career Grand Slam.

The 28-year-old goes on to face Australian 19-year-old Thanasi Kokkinakis for a place in the last 16. Teenager Kokkinakis gave a glimpse of the potential future of the sport when he saved three match points to beat fellow Australian Bernard Tomic 3-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 8-6 to make the third round of a major for the first time.

The ninth-seeded Croatian fired 38 winners in a 7-6 (7/3), 6-1, 6-1 win over Italian qualifier Andrea Arnaboldi.

Serena and Kvitova edge ahead:

Serena Williams and Petra Kvitova survived big scares at the French Open, both needing to come back from a set down to reach the third round.

The 33-year-old, top-seeded American dropped the first set and faced break points against her unheralded 21-year-old opponent in the second, but she rallied just in time to go through 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.

In other women’s second-round play, two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic won 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-2 against Silvia Soler-Espinosa of Spain.

Fifth seed Caroline Wozniacki was packing her bags for home after the Dane lost 4-6, 6-7 (4/7) to an impressive Julia Goerges of Germany.

Sania crashes in mixed doubles:

Top seeds Sania Mirza and Bruno Soares of Brazil crashed out in the first round of the mixed doubles event after suffering a shocking straight sets defeat at the hands of unseeded Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Jean-Julien Rojer at the French Open tennis tournament here on Thursday.

Sania and Soares lost 2-6, 2-6 in just 56 minutes against the unseeded German-Dutch combination at the Rolland Garros.

The top seeds did not have best of starts as Groenefeld and Rojer broke the Indo-Brazilian pair in the their first service game to race to a 3-0 lead in the first set.

In fact, the unseeded Groenfeld and Rojer combination were by far the bestter side on the court in all aspects of the game in the opening set.
