Austerity move in the wake of financial crunch

The Telangana State Government and the Road Transport Corporation (RTC) are being cornered on a number of issues. The corporation is on the verge of bifurcation and the employees recently managed to push the government to hike their salaries. This has placed an enormous burden on the finances of the RTC which has now decided to adopt austerity measures in the Greater Hyderabad region.

“To cope with the losses, RTC officials are mulling cancellation of night services in the city or limit it to a halfway point. Due to the hike in salaries, the corporation has to bear an additional expenditure of Rs 350-375 crore. Added to this, rise in diesel prices is incurring a loss of Rs 140 crore. We definitely need a special grant to function properly,” said a senior RTC official.

“In the financial year 2013-14, RTC earned a profit of Rs 8 lakh. But this year, fortunes overturned leading to a huge loss of Rs 140 crore. Around 500 buses do not function and remain in the depo for various reasons,” he added.
