Kidney racket: Odisha team in Vizag
Members of Enforcement Directorate of Odisha continued their search for several documents related to kidney transplantation till Friday evening. The Three Town police officials accompanied the ED officials. The officials arrived here on Wednesday to resume the kidney racket which led to the arrest of Seven Hills Hospital director Dr N Prabhakar Babu in June last year. Three Town Circle Inspector K Tirumala Rao said they helped the officials in examining the hospital records.

Last year, the Cuttack police busted an illegal kidney sale racket where mediators were luring poor people for organ donation, bypassing the stipulated norms of Odisha State Authorisation Committee on Human Organ Transplantation. Victims were drawn from remote areas of the State and offered peanut for their organs.
The racket saw the light when a woman lodged a complaint with the police that she was cheated by the agents after collecting her kidney. She said an amount of Rs 10 lakh was promised but she was paid only Rs 20,000 after the transplant. Incidentally the transplantation took place in Seven Hills Hospital in the city and its Director Dr. Prabhakar Babu was responsible for the operation.
Dr. Babu was arrested under Sections 320B, 18, 368, 471 and 420 of IPC for performing the organ transplantation without verifying facts. But his lawyers contended that the hospital performed the operation after they were shown documents.
