Fight for supremacy in T-town comes to fore
Cultural divide in tinsel town seems to be widening by the day as the bigwigs of Telugu filmdom, belonging to Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states, are vying with each to get supremacy over the multi-crore industry. According to sources, Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce is trying to stifle the voice of Telangana film fraternity in its body, in its efforts to continue its domination even in the new State.

Hyderabad: Cultural divide in tinsel town seems to be widening by the day as the bigwigs of Telugu filmdom, belonging to Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states, are vying with each to get supremacy over the multi-crore industry. According to sources, Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce is trying to stifle the voice of Telangana film fraternity in its body, in its efforts to continue its domination even in the new State.

Even though Telangana producers, studio-owners, distributors and exhibitors filed nominations for the 44-member executive committee, the scrutiny committee on Saturday reportedly raised objections against the applications of some Telangana members and threatened to reject their nominations on flimsy grounds.
It said that one producer did not pay dues of Rs 4 lakhs nearly 10 years ago and another’s application for filing nomination reached post deadline. It said yet another person was not available at the time of filing nomination and so on. “When we demanded 50 per cent reservation in the executive committee since our voice should be heard in the new State, they threatened to reject nominations of Telangana members on flimsy grounds.
So, we had no choice but to argue for five hours till late night and a few members even exchanged blows.” “We will not allow Andhra hegemony to continue in Telugu film industry. We will take this to the notice of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao,” lamented a Telangana member, who attended the meeting, on condition of anonymity.
The executive committee comprises of 16 exhibitors, 12 producers, 8 studio owners and 14 distributors. The committee’s office bearers will be elected on July 11 and they, in turn, would elect the new president of Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce. So, it becomes crucial for Andhra-born bigwigs to pack the committee with majority of its members to keep its hold over the body, according to sources.
Invariably, members from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh fought it out literally, say insiders. “No exchange of blows between members,” denied Vijayendar Reddy, a contestant of the executive committee. “Of course, members discussed various issues and it took some time to resolve them.
Finally, it was decided to accept nominations of all 70 members without any conditions,” he said. On the demand of 50 per cent reservation for Telangana members, he said it was also discussed but they would be able to take a decision only after withdrawals of nominations.
