Tirupati: Government will tackle the ragging menace with an iron hand and take all steps to flush out the undesirable elements from universities, said HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao here on Monday. Briefing media on the deliberations of the meeting of the Vice-Chancellors of 15 universities held at SV University here, he said that as part of the measures to deal sternly with ragging it was decided to install CCTVs, bio-metric systems in all university hostels and issue bar-coded identity cards to the students.
This was to check outsiders and others unauthorisedly staying in hostels and to prevent overstaying of research scholars or students’ relatives in the hostels. The measure is aimed at weeding out undesirable elements from the universities, the Minister said. It was also decided not to allow private functions in university auditoria.
Members who took part in the Vice-Chancellor’s meeting observed a two-minute silence as a mark of respect to B.Arch student M Rishiteswari who committed suicide in her hostel room at Nagarjuna University two weeks ago as she was allegedly unable to bear the harassment of some seniors.
Describing the suicide committed by the student as most unfortunate and sad incident; the Minister said apart from the inquiry ordered by ANU, the State government also ordered a probe by a senior IAS officer into the death. Based on the report, corrective measures will be taken up to avoid such tragic incidents in the universities.
He said that the government will elicit opinion from the public including parents, students, intellectuals, teachers etc. on the Private Universities bill. Expressing concern over the delay in conducting examinations and declaring results affecting the students, he said efforts are on to ensure the universities strictly adhere to the `academic calendar’ in the coming days.
Filling up of the posts of Vice-Chancellors lying vacant in the universities will be taken up immediately and search committees will be set up for the selection of suitable candidates for the posts, he said. University executive committees will also be reconstituted soon for streamlining the functioning of the universities.
On the improvement of primary education, the Minister said the process of recruitment of the 10,311 selected teachers will be taken up after the court verdictt. The vacant posts of MEOs and DEOs will also be filled up. Srinivasa Rao informed that IIT Tirupati will be inaugurated with an intake of 120 students at a function to be organised on August 15.
Andhra Pradesh State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE) Chairman L Venugopal Reddy, secretary Sumitra Dawra, SV University Vice-Chancellor Rajagopal and others were present.
