Hyderabad: Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is all set to begin the phase I of Strategic Road Development Programme (SRDP) in September to ease traffic congestion at a cost of Rs 2,700 crore. GHMC Commissioner Somesh Kumar said tenders would be floated within two days and they would be finalised by the last week of August. He also said the works would begin in the second week of September.
Speaking to the Hans India, Somesh Kumar said special class contractors would be invited to ensure that the projects would be completed within the given time of 30 months. The commissioner further said that a budget of Rs 600 crore would be allocated in the GHMC annual budget. The payment to the contractors would be made only after the completion of works in every three months.
The commissioner is confident of completing the majority of flyovers in 18 months by using world-class technology. He also added that tenders for phase II would be awarded in September. When asked about the land acquisition, the commissioner said there was no land available in at least 12 to 13 areas to construct the project. He, however, said they would manage to acquire required land and ensure minimum property damage due to the construction.
According to the GHMC officials, the project has been divided into three major corridors (MCs) and the first MC would be around KBR Park including KBR entrance junction, Maharaja Agrasen Junction (Road No 12), Cancer Hospital junction, Film Nagar junction, Road No 45 junction and Jubilee Hills Check Post junction.
Apart from constructing flyover, the civic body will enhance the corridors by road-widening, improving pedestrian facilities, constructing exclusive bus bays, jogging tracks and also build parks for the eco-friendly environment. The second MC around LB Nagar junction would also include inner ring roads. The third corridor from the Biodiversity junction to Kukatpally included elevated rotary cum grade separator at the Cyber Tower junction, the officials added.
The officials said most of the roads in all corridors would have 3+3 lanes with seven-metre-high flyovers and a distance of two to three kilometres. They added that each corridor would be about 20 kilometres distance.
