Polls due for 12 seats under local body quota
Hyderabad: The schedule for MLC elections was expected to be announced in the next ten days. The file pertaining to the increase of three seats in Telangana State was learnt to be with Union Law Department. According to a senior official of the Election Commission, the elections most likely would be held in the month of September. All formalities would be completed in 35 to 40 days time after the release of the schedule, he said.
State Election Commissioner Bhanwar Lal held a meeting with national and State recognised parties on June 6 regarding the delimitation process under which three new MLC seats were added into Telangana quota. Mahbubnagar, Karimnagar and Ranga Reddy got one additional seat each based on population and the election body sought views and opinions of all parties.
A related report was sent to Central Election Commission soon afterwards. According to a senior TRS leader, the two-month delay was due to slow movement in the file; first it went to Home Minister and then to President who referred it to Law department for legal opinion. The MLC elections were to be held for 12 seats in nine districts, except Hyderabad. Mahbubnagar, Karimnagar and Ranga Reddy districts each have two vacant seats, while the rest of the six districts have one vacant seat each.
In accordance with AP Reorganisation Act, Telangana State got three MLC seats extra, increasing the total tally from the previous number of eleven to fourteen seats. As the tenure of two MLCs, MS Prabhakar and Syed Aminul Hasan Jaffri (from Hyderabad) was not completed, elections would be held for other vacant seats in the nine districts, majority of which fell vacant in May.
