Long queues have become the order of the day at Malakpet RTA

Rahmat Ali, resident of Santosh Nagar, sold his two-wheeler and was asked to go to the Road Transport Authority (RTA)’s Malakpet East office on Wednesday to complete the change of ownership formalities. The approval had to be completed by 4 pm or the applicant would have to take another challan the following day.

In Rahmat’s case, he ran out of time due to lengthy queue and couldn’t complete the procedure as he had to catch a flight to Dubai late in the evening. “If there were additional cameras or a special room to complete the process, it would have been good,” lamented Manohar, a applicant at the Malakpet RTA.

On August 4, Transport Minister P Mahender Reddy inaugurated a camera facility at the Khairatabad RTA. Uppal, Attapur and Medchal are the only other RTA offices that have an additional camera. Malakpet, Trimulgherry, Mehdipatnam, Kondapur, Kukatpally, Ibrahimpatnam and Bahadurpura still do not have additional cameras.

M Dayanand, a resident of Moula Ali, says, “The intention of the government is laudable but it should also ensure that adequate facilities are in place. Why should people have to go back and return the next day? In most cases people take leave for completing the transactions.”

Also people have to pay Rs 200 as service charges. The charges were increased from Rs 100 to Rs 2o0 six months ago.In the past, photo was mandatory only for learning license and for renewal of driving license. Now it is compulsory for new registrations, transfer of ownership of motor vehicles, termination of agreement of finance and for all other transactions including goods vehicles.

Transport department officials say that there was a proposal to set up additional cameras but it seems there is no urgency. In many RTA offices, there are power cuts and generators do not function. The government introduced the system of making photos compulsory after it was successfully implemented in Delhi, Trivandrum and Chennai. Mahaveer, a businessman, said, “There is also shortage of staff. In case someone is on leave the substitute person is unable to complete the work quickly.”

People beat up staff at Khairatabad RTA

Denizens beat up support staff of High Security Number Plates (HSNP) at Khairatabad RTA office on Tuesday as they were asked to find for the number plates from a heap all by themselves and the staff also demanded Rs 100 for fitting the number plates. Suresh, an irate customer said,

“We pay Rs 244 as charges and we have to run around the staff to complete the procedure. I was told to find the rear as well as the frontal number plates myself.” Even as confusion prevailed a few customers pulled out number plates and flung them on the street and beat up the support staff whose job is to fit the number plates.

Aadhaar card still being asked for at offices In spite of the Supreme Court ruling that the Aadhaar card is not mandatory, officials in several RTA offices still ask people to produce the card. It also shows in the system. Mallikarjuna Rao, an agent, said that the Aadhaar card should not reflect in the system.
