Dearth of heroines hits T-town hard

From Pawan Kalyan to Mahesh Babu, Ram Charan to Jr NTR and Prabhas to Ravi Teja are running short of big heroines and holding their projects due to lack of popular heroines to match their stature.
With superstars disliking repeating the actresses quite often and seeking new combinations, the task becomes more difficult for the producer. “It’s true that big stars are waiting for good heroines since a bankable heroine will add value to the production. We have to chase a handful of top actresses for the production.
We have no choice but to repeat the star-actress combo sometimes but surely we need more gorgeous girls,” admits top producer Bogavali Prasad. Currently, Tamannah, Samanta, Shruti Hassan, Kaajal and Rakul Preet Singh are leading the pack of A-listers, followed by relatively older actresses like Anushka, Trisha and Nayantara, whereas up and coming actresses like Regina and Raashi Khanna are showing some spark.
“We have everything indigenous except the heroine so we run to Mumbai, Kerala, Karnataka and Chennai in search of a leading actress. We also browse through the portfolios of innumerable models. Some models who look good lack acting skills. And sometimes it is vice versa. So we don’t know what to do.
To add to this, some of these so-called A-listers are doing Tamil and Hindi movies making it difficult for us to get dates,” says director Chandra Siddharth, who introduced a Thailand girl in his last film. However, director Teja says that it’s unfair for big stars to crib about lack of heroines.
“Most of the star-films are hero-centric since the role of a heroine is almost zero. They are roped in to add glam quotient to appear in four songs and four scenes in skimpy outfits. This has been so in the latest 20-30 films,” he says. “Andhra families don’t like their girls to be in films due to rumours, media attention or otherwise.
Whenever, I give a casting call, out of 1,000 aspirants, only four to five Telugu girls turn up. Getting a Telugu girl for the project is a pipe dream. Tamil and Kerala girls love to act in films,” analyses Teja.
