The tendering process for the supply of smart cards has been completed. The transport department is yet to disclose to whom the contract has been awarded. Sources confirm that the contract will be given for a one-year period against the three-year period that was decided previously.

The contractor would be supplying the smart cards at Rs 24 per card to the transport department. Consumers will have to pay Rs 450, which include Rs 200 towards service charge and Rs 250 for the smart card. Meanwhile applications for driving licences and vehicle registrations are piling up at the RTA offices in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts.

“We do not know for how long the present supply would last. If the new contractor does not start supplying cards soon it would be difficult,” said an official at the Khairatabad office. The smart cards have a memory chip with data pertaining to vehicle fitness, insurance, road safety violations and pending challans among other features.

A senior official of the transport department said, “The smart cards were introduced in 2008 and it is a good move but the tendering process has to start well in advance for continuous supply of smart cards.” There are no cards in the district RTA offices since August 18, except for Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy.

Officials fear that the delay in supply of smart cards would increase workload in the future. With inadequate staff, the piling up of applications would create complications. On an average 200 transactions take place in each RTA office in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy.
