Sensex close 59 pts, Nifty above 8,300

Mumbai: The market close on a sluggish note on Thursday, the last day of May derivative series. The markets also witnessed selling pressure in banks and pharma shares. Sensex close by 58 points at 27,506 and Nifty down 15 points at 8,319. The broader markets also closed in red with midcap and smallcap declined 0.5 per cent and 0.1 per cent, respectively.

On the sectroal front, the banking and pharma shares declined while IT and auto sectors provided support to market. Among the pharma pack, Cipla down 2.5 per cent, while Dr REddy and Sun Pharma down 1 per cent and 2 per cent, respectively. Coming to the banking stock, HDFC Bank and SBI down were about 1 per cent.

On the other hand, auto stocks were seen gaining as Tata Motors gained 2.5 per cent, while Hero Motocorp reported higher nearly by 2 per cent. And from software stock Infosys up over 2 per cent, while TCS and Wipro also closed in green.

The gainers: Vedanta, up 2.53 per cent at Rs 196.90; Tata Motors, up 2.52 per cent at Rs 483.55; Infosys, up 2.30 per cent at Rs 2,014.30; Hero MotoCorp, up 1.42 per cent at Rs 2,641.95; and BHEL, up 1.16 per cent at Rs 251.95.

The losers: Cipla, down 2.58 per cent at Rs 643.40; Tata Power down 2.18 per cent at Rs 74.05; Sun Pharma, down 1.94 per cent at Rs 955.75; Mahindra and Mahindra, down 1.93 per cent at Rs 1,201.45; and Bharti Airtel, down 1.76 per cent at Rs 401.30.
