Guntur: Describing Mahatma Gandhi as ‘the greatest celebrity in history’, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu urged the present generation to emulate him.

“He was a visionary to the core and foresaw the problems of India in future and suggested remedial measures long ago,” he added.

Participating in the 146th birht anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi at the Himani Centre, Lalapet here on Friday, the Chief Minister said that Gandhi psychologically influenced the British rulers with his doctrine of non-violence.

Mahatma believed in secularism to the core, he said. Naidu added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, influenced by the Gandhian thought,

launched Swachh Bharath mission one year ago on the same day. He said that the Prime Minister constituted a national Swachh Bharath committee with all States as members and with Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister as convenor.

He stated that he had made some recommendations to the Prime Minister who is the chairman of the committee.Speaking on high level public consciousness in Japan and Singapore,

Chief Minister said that nobody cleans the roads and nobody throws garbage on streets and hence there would be no necessity for the civic staff to clean.

He asserted that in those said countries, even drainage water is recycled for industrial and drinking water purposes and added that the entire garbage is recycled to avoid ground water pollution.

The Chief Minister promised to transform Andhra Pradesh into a model state and administered a pledge to keep Andhra Pradesh clean, before paying tributes to freedom fighters from Guntur, including Sivarama Krishnaiah and Balaram Murthy.

He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would take part in the capital foundation laying ceremony on October 22.
