Uttar Pradesh police on Sunday detained a homeguard constable, who allegedly is the key conspirator behind the killing of Mohammad Ikhlaq. According to reports, the constable, incited a mob after spreading rumours that Ikhlaq had consumed beef.

It is also learnt that the constable had personal enmity with Ikhlaq hence he forced the temple priest to make announcement about Ikhlaq's family consuming beef.

In another development, the family members of Ikhlaq met Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav in Lucknow. Yadav had earlier announced a compensation of Rs. 20 lakh to the kin of 50-year-old Akhlaq.

The Chief Minister had also assured justice to the family of Akhlaq and said those responsible would be severely punished.

"The government and law and administration will do its work. The accused won't be able to get rid of the law. Justice will be done in this case and the culprits will be severely punished," he said.

Meanwhile, two main accused in the lynching case, Shivam and Vishal, were arrested by the police on Saturday, raising the total number of accused in the case to eight.

The two youngsters, both aged 18 years, were arrested from their hideout in a locality close to Bishada, the scene of Monday night when 50-year-old Iqlakh was killed, police said.

Iqlakh was dragged out of his home and stoned to death on a village street after a public announcement from the local temple that the family had slaughtered a calf and eaten its meat. While Iqlakh died, his 22-year-old son Danish is battling for life at a hospital following two brain surgeries.
