Hyderabad: Innovation by the Board of Secondary Education to raise levels of standards has taken a heavy toll on the pass percentage of students in March this year.

Faced with protests from parents and students to add grace marks to help the flunked students, the secondary education officials have decided to make it a bit easy for the SSC students from this academic year.

The pass percentage of the SSC students has come down to 77.56 per cent this year against 85.77 per cent the last year. The Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation System (CCE), introduced for the first time, was initially appreciated by the parents and teachers stating that it would bring in quality learning among the students.

But the results came has a blot from the blue to the parents. The students, who appeared for the SSC examinations with CCE pattern, found that question paper of physics and mathematics was extremely difficult.

Some of the questions were out of the syllabus and some were very critical in nature. Several students failed to clear both the subjects thereby decreasing the overall pass percentage.

Furious parents along with their wards ransacked the office of Hyderabad DEO demanding grace marks. However, the government did not heed to their demands.

Keeping the protests in view, the Directorate of School Education has decided to reduce the percentage of tough questions. Henceforth, the question papers would be set keeping average students’ learning capabilities in mind.

About 40 per cent of the questions would be framed at an average level, 40 per cent above average level and 20 per cent critical questions. Instructions have been given to question paper setters to ask questions from within the subjects. Unlike last year, the number of analytical questions will be avoided.

Instead straight questions where students stand to score more marks will be asked. The State Council of Educational and Training held a workshop for the teachers for preparing the question paper in this direction.

Besides, the objective type questions which have been part of the theory question paper would be separated. The objective paper would be given separately to the students from this academic year.

“After writing examination, several students took away the question papers. We decided to give separate paper for objective type questions which will be tied to the answer sheets,” a senior official said.
