Hyderabad: Here is yet another high for the City of Pearls. Hyderabad stands fourth in the world and first in India in issuing visas for students pursing higher studies in the US varsities. Besides, Hyderabad is in the second position in world in H1B visas.

According to the statistics, the number of Indian students pursuing education in the US has increased from 1,13,649 in July 2014 to 1,49,999 in July 2015 registering 31.98 percent growth.

Most of the students to US varsities are from the two Telugu-speaking states. This year, there was an increase by 51 percent of the student visa applications. Out of this, 40 percent of the student visas were issued from the Hyderabad.

These details were shared by Michael Mullins Consul General, US Consulate General in Hyderabad, on the sidelines of University fair of US India Education Foundation (USIEF) and Education USA, at a hotel in Hyderabad on Wednesday.

“There are so many students in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana who are anxious to study in the US. There is huge number of applicants from the Hyderabad,” said Michael.

When asked about how many visas were rejected, Mullins said, “that’s not the number that I want to be proud off. We are not in the business of denying visas but in the business of issuing visas. That’s our job and that’s our goal.”

The US Consulate General in Hyderabad looks whether a student has true intention of pursuing higher education or has other plans.

“We check how students will pay for their education and post education plans. Depending on these criteria visas are issued,” he said. Engineering courses are the most sought after followed by management course in the US varsities.

Students pursuing education in the US have been advised to apply for varsities which have accreditation status. Ishrat Jahan, Regional Educational and advising coordinator-Education USA, informed that over 4,500 institutions have accreditation status and students can check the accreditation details on www.chea.org or by visiting US Education adviser in Hyderabad.

During the fair, as many as 1,300 students participated and obtained details of various courses and admission process from 23 universities.
