Mangalagiri AIIMS gets Centre’s nod
The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved setting up of All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Mangalagiri in Guntur district along with one each in West Bengal (Kalyani) and Maharashtra (Nagpur) at a cost of Rs 4,949 crore.
New Delhi: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved setting up of All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Mangalagiri in Guntur district along with one each in West Bengal (Kalyani) and Maharashtra (Nagpur) at a cost of Rs 4,949 crore.
These institutes would come up under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) in the next five years. The proposed AIIMS would have hospitals with a capacity of 960 beds in addition to the teaching,
administrative and AYUSH blocks, auditoria, nursing colleges, night shelters for patient attendants, hostels and residential facilities, an official statement said here on Wednesday. The AIIMs at Mangalagiri would come up at a cost of Rs 1,618 crore.
AIIMS for Mangalagiri is a dream come true for the AP people as it was one of the promises incorporated in the Thirteenth Schedule (Section 93) - Education, of the Extraordinary Gazette of the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014.
While the bitter debate was on in Parliament then, the BJP leadership in the Opposition in those days, promised to give as many institutions and financial packages along with a Special Status to the residual State of Andhra Pradesh, which would be deprived of either a capital or other institutions of excellence which were mostly concentrated in Telangana.
The Thirteenth Schedule stated that “the Government of India shall take steps to establish institutions of national importance in the 12th and 13th Plan periods in the successor State of Andhra Pradesh.
This would include one IIT, one NIT, one IIM, one IISER, one Central University, one Petroleum University, one Agricultural University and one IIIT.
The Government of India shall establish one AIIMS-type Super-Specialty Hospital-cum-Teaching Institution in the successor State of Andhra Pradesh.
The Government of India shall establish a Tribal University each in the State of Andhra Pradesh and in the State of Telangana. The Government of India shall establish the National Institute of Disaster Management in the successor State of Andhra Pradesh".
The issue of AIIMS at Mangalagiri landed in controversy with the Guntur-Vijayawada Hospitals and Medical colleges’ managements reportedly opposing the move in their own vested interest.
Their fears of losing business allegedly made them apply pressure on the State Government which had almost earmarked the required land for the prestigious institution.
AP Health Minister Kamineni Srinivas belonging to the BJP ruled out change in the venue of the AIIMS and said it should not lead to any unfounded concerns, during his recent visit to New Delhi.
