Disclosing this at the Karthika Vana Mahotsavam, organised by the Forest Department, here on Wednesday, he said as many as 1 crore saplings would be planted in the new capital Amaravati to live up to its proposed greenfield city. These 1 crore saplings would be made available through 18 nurseries, he added.

To achieve the envisaged target, the Chief Minister said that the plantations would begin from July 1, 2016 across the State, and 1 crore saplings would be made available by the Forest Department.

While appealing to people at large to join hands with the massive plantation programme, ‘Neeru Chettu', he said 1600 physiometres would be installed across the State to record the groundwater tables.

“In order to take students along in this massive project, nurseries would be set up in 1500 schools across the State. Also, it is important to note that this not just aimed at planting saplings, but also watering them regularly to ensure most of the saplings survive,” he added.

The Chief Minister lamented that the green cover in the State had come down to 22 per cent, and promised to increase it to 50 per cent in next ten years. He blamed the recent floods in Chittor, Nellore, and drought-conditions in several areas of the State on excessive deforestation. Earlier, Forest Department special chief secretary AK Parida informed that 2000 industries in the state were involved in the green movement.

Agriculture Minister Pulla Rao, Social Welfare Minister Ravela Kishore Babu, MP Galla Jayadev, Assembly Speaker Kodela Siva Prasada Rao and others participated in the programme.
