Hyderabad: There is a steep increase in the number of cases of violence against women in Telangana. According to official data, there is an increase of 6.22 percent cases of violence over the last year. While 9,749 cases of violence were registered in Telangana till September-end in 2014, the figure for the corresponding period this year is 10,355.

The figures indicate that the total number of rapes had also gone up alarmingly. While 710 cases were reported till September end in 2014, as many as 823 cases were reported this year.

Similarly, while 2370 cases of molestation were reported in 2014 till the end of September, 2687 cases were recorded for the same period this year marking an increase of 13.38 percent. Interestingly, cases of kidnapping of women fell by 11.26 percent and bigamy cases also came down to 19.06 percent.

But the rate of sexual harassment went up by 6.87 percent. The statistics showed that as many as 4894 cases of sexual harassment were reported in 2014 and 5230 cases in 2015.

Speaking to The Hans India, Dr Soumya Mishra, IG, CID, (Women Protection Cell) said that this does not mean that there has been increase in the crime rate.

The fact is that the police was now more people-friendly and hence the victims were coming forward to register the cases.

She said earlier such victims used to take the help of family panchayats or elders. Now these systems were slowly fading away because of modernization and urbanization and reforms in the police system.

She said the government had formed committees to oversee the safety and security of women and many of the recommendations were being implemented. The Joint Director, Women and Child Welfare Department, told The Hans India that after the formation of safety and security of girls and women committee,

‘Sakhi Centre’s had been established in all districts except in Karimnagar. So far, as many as 596 cases were registered at the centre, of these 500 cases pertain to domestic violence and 96 were sexual harassment.
