Awareness on DB Act is needed, opine experts
“There is an immense need to educate the writers and publishers about the DB Act, which is a benefit for both the public as well as writers and publishers at large’’, said deputy director of the Raja Rammohun Roy Library Foundation and Librarian of Central Library, Soumen Sarkar in the city on Friday.

He inaugurated the two day seminar on ‘Delivery of Books and Newspapers (Public Libraries) Act, 1954 Amended 1956, at Andhra Loyola College.
Speaking on the occasion, Soumen Sarkar opined that according to the Act, a copy of every book that is published should be sent to the Central Library along with one in Chennai and New Delhi. The point is that there would be a greater opportunity for any linguist to chose from languages they prefer and availability of the book.
By submitting a copy each to the libraries, it can be preserved to perpetuate. This is also a boon for the upcoming and new writers to be present and available for reader throughout the country. Unfortunately, only 30 per cent of the books which are being published are reaching the library, every year. There is a need to create awareness and that is why this two day seminar is being organised, he said.
During the technical sessions, topics like ‘Awareness on DB Act 1954’, was discussed by Prof B Ramesh Babu and paper presentations on ‘Writer-Publishers: Non-Commercial , Collaborative Efforts of Authors and Publishers, and others were held. On the occasion, a book on proceedings of the seminar and information of DB Act was released by Soumen.
Rector Fr D Ravi Sekhar, Correspondent Fr V Raju, Principal of the College who is director of the Gordon Library and chairman of the seminar Fr GAP Kishore spoke on the occasion and boasted about the one lakh plus books in their institute’s library, that is thriving to impart knowledge on all spheres.
Assistant Librarian and AO at National Library Kolkata S Siva Prasad, LIS Scholar Andhra University Prof K Somasekhara Rao, Information Officer B Nageswara Rao, seminar coordinator G A Prasad Rao, Librarians, representatives from cultural organisations, writers and others were present during the programme.
