Swiss-Spanish flavour comes to Sports Village

A nationally pioneering brainchild of the Village CEO, Mohammad Shamsuddin, a globe-trotting scribe-rower-turned-tennis promoter, the Spanish Method Tennis Camp, which will run up to December 12, brings together coaches, including a woman, from the two tennis powerhouses.
To make it a professional set up that would abide by the best of overseas practices, Sports Village has tied up with the globally acclaimed Barcelona Tennis Academy (BTA), whose experts will oversee the coaching techniques that will be imparted and also recreate an environment that would attune youngsters to the European and American styles of play as they would be exposed to the competitive levels that are prevalent worldwide.
According to Shamsuddin, who has represented Andhra Pradesh in canoeing and rowing in National Games, 40 trainees have been short-listed for the first phase of coaching, which will commence soon after its inauguration by the State Sports Minister T Padma Rao in the presence of A Dinakar Babu, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director, Sports Authority of Telangana State and B Venkatesham, Tourism Secretary.
Raphael Maurer, Carlos Baguena and Lara Tena Fasulba will be the coaches while the support staff comes in the form of Adria Monras Consuegra, who will look into fitness aspects, whereas Jordi Comalat will be the team manager.
Not only will they teach the nuances to the trainees (aged between seven and 20 years) even the Indian coaches will undergo orientation programmes so that they could continue the scientifically-evolved systematic regimen into the future.
The camp will gradually move to Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Pune and New Delhi as the endeavour of the promoters is to tap and provide a platform for national talent.
Shamsuddin stated that the ten best performing trainees will have the privilege of attending a camp in Barcelona.
