Departments urged to bring down infant and maternity mortality
“It is a matter of concern that maternity and infant mortality rates in the State has been increasing despite having enough facilities,” opined Minister for Health Kamineni Srinivas on Monday.

He asked the concerned Medical and Health Officers from across the State to take necessary steps to bring down the number of such deaths, while addressing a State level workshop on AP Newborn Action Plan (APNAP), held by UNICEF at Hotel Gateway.
Speaking at the inauguration of the workshop, Minister said that the Central government has sanctioned funds to empower the pre-natal health care sector across the State. As many as 10 pre-natal health care centers will come up in various parts along with a full-fledged hospital at Tirupati that caters to the pregnant women health and care. “The need of the time hour is to bring down the mortality rate and achieve single digit in the rate of deaths even before the target set,” he said.
Principal Secretary to Health and Medicine, Poonam Malakondiah speaking on the occasion said that the department is strengthening the manpower by building capacity, skill development, and training centres. “The skill of workers at mandal levels, training for Asha workers, public education programme is top on our agenda.
Empowering maternal and child health blocks and putting them to use is another measure that we are looking into in order to make them available for the pregnant women. Toll free number 102 will be available exclusively for the needs of pregnant women, new born and mothers. The opinions and suggestions that will be drawn at the end of workshop will be put for government’s approval before implementation at the grass root levels,” she added.
Later in a session, topics such as Background and overview of India Newborn Action Plan (INAP), Strategic Intervention Packages-Six pillars of INAP were discussed in detail. Group work on developing priority actions for APNAP and discussion on APNAP were held as a part of the workshop.
Senior Advisor Dr Arun Singh, State MCH Consultant Dr Neerada, joint director of Child Health Dr Vanisri, Commissioner of Health & Family Welfare K V Satyanarayana and others spoke on the occasion.
