Abhishek Raghuram hails from a family of musicians (grandson of mridangam legend Palghat Raghu) and is under the tutelage of Padmabhushan PS Narayanaswamy, equipped with all the intricacies of music.
In the ongoing Kalasagaram Annual Musical Festival being held at Keyes High School, on the 5th day it was the turn of Abhishek Raghuram to showcase his expertise, vociferously spreading ragamadhuryam/ raghurama madhuryam as also swarakalpana in all its nectar sweetness.
His vociferous vocal recital started with Muthuswamy Dikshitar’s krithi “Kailasanatha Smaraami” in the Durbar Ragam as an invocation item with a clear show of ragalapana trait, much to the delight of the audience.
He then moved onto another of Dikshitar’s, “Varaahim Vaishnaveem” (Chakravakam) wherein he energised the audience with his emotive and creative swarakalpana besides embellishing the phrase “Karuna Kataksha Veekshanee” and elaborated the nervals more appealingly.
As part of guru vandana, he dealt with a Dhanyasi raga krtihi of Koteswara Ayyer’s in Tamil, tuned by his own guru PS Narayanaswamy. It was in the main piece Poorvikalyani krithi, “Avadharaya Maa Meeswaram Devaadi Deyvam” of Saint Sree Narayana Teerthulu, “Raghuram” in which he showed impeccable style of rendering besides an exhibition of an extensive ragalapana giving enough turn to the violin musician HN Bhaskar and the needed exposure to the other instrumentalists Arjunakumar (mridangam) and B Sree Sundar Kumar (kanjeera) to follow him in the same tenor, kindling enthusiasm.
At the charana-phrase “Paribhaavaya Maamithi Paramaatma Geetha Miha”, he rendered the phrase-words, again and again to stress the lyrical taste in ample measure with all the melodic touch. “Tani Aarthanam” by Arjunkumar and Sundar Kumar was a treat.
Then he dealt with just one Tyagaraaja krithi “Dandamu Bettenuraa (or Bettedanuraa)”, which he incorrectly pronounced as “Mettenuraa”. He concluded the concert with “Srungara Rasa Manjari” of Dikshitar and a jaavali in janjhooti rag, which was very appealing without leaving the ambit of ragalapana at any stage of his concert. It was rejoicing and awe-inspiring for the connoisseurs who spent 3 hours with the experience of atmaanubhuthi.
On the same occasion, Jonnalagadda Rambabu, former Principal Secretary, Government of Andhra Pradesh felicitated the illustrious icons of music, Annavarapu Ramaswany (violin wizard) and Padmabhushan PS Narayanaswamy with “Sangeetha Kalasagra” title.
