DMHO raids hospital
Following reports that private clinics in the district were resorting to illegal sex determination tests and were even taking up abortions, District Medical Health officials along with officials from the Revenue department conducted late night raids on a private hospital at Narayanapet in Mahbubnagar district and seized records pertaining to “illegal abortions” conducted in the hospital.
Mahbubnagar: Following reports that private clinics in the district were resorting to illegal sex determination tests and were even taking up abortions, District Medical Health officials along with officials from the Revenue department conducted late night raids on a private hospital at Narayanapet in Mahbubnagar district and seized records pertaining to “illegal abortions” conducted in the hospital.
According to Additional District Medical officer Dr Sridhar Reddy, based on a tip-off received by District Collector Dr TK Sridevi, a team of officials conducted the raids and confiscated patients’ registers, casesheets, details about surgeries conducted and hospital registration records.
At the time of the raid, a tribal pregnant woman named ‘Devibai’ belonging to Vootakunda Thanda in Narayanpet Mandal was being given anesthesia to conduct abortion by the doctors at the hospital. Devibai already has two girls and had undergone abortion once in the past. “We have seized all the records of the hospitals and we shall come out with more details very soon,” said Dr Sridhar Reddy.
As part of their in depth investigation, the officials have formed a team that would go to nearby villages to enquire with the patients who had reportedly undergone abortions and will submit investigation reports to the DMHO.
The DMHO said though the government had banned pre-natal sex determination tests, the couples are reportedly approaching private scanning centers for sex determination tests.
