Maruti is expected to offer automatic gearboxes both on the petrol as well as diesel engines and the more powerful BoosterJet might make it on the Swift as well.

The new Swift was first showcased at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show and the car looks fresh, exciting and aggressive. The stance of the new Swift remains the same but is a whole lot different from its predecessor. The bonnet, headlights with LED DRLs, the new hexagonal honeycomb grille all set it apart from the older model. Noticeable changes on the side are the larger rear doors and the door handles placed on the blackened C-pillar. The rear gets a new set of tail lights.

Like the Baleno and the new DZire, the Swift too underpins the HEARTACT platform, but it has been made even lighter and stiffer with the kerb weight now starting at just 890 kgs. The new Swift is slightly lower in height than its predecessor, however it will sit on a wheelbase of 2450 mm that is marginally longer. As everyone’s aware, more the wheelbase more the inside space. Basically, the legroom for the second row passengers has improved. Boot space too has grown from 200-litres to 254-litres.

The interiors are all new with a new dash layout, new flat bottom steering wheel and a new SmartPlay infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The power window controls have been carried over from its predecessor, however the SmartPlay system is likely to be updated with a new app-based look before the Swift hits the showrooms in India.

On the engines front, Maruti will carry forward the same 1.2-litre K-Series petrol and 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engines and is expected to offer an automatic gearbox with both the engines. Maruti is also likely to offer the 1.0-litre BoosterJet on the Swift making an already hot-hatch even hotter.

The new Swift is likely to get a price hike of five per cent compared to the current model. The Swift has been selling like hot cakes in India over the past decade and the new model will cater to a lot of buyers too.
