Kakinada: Child marriages are one of the social diseases that are hindering progress of India, according to Sri Lakshmi, an advocate, at a legal awareness programme organised by District Legal Services Authority at Ramanayya Peta here on Sunday.

Speaking on this occasion, she said that even after 70 years of Independence, a large chunk of the society still thinks that girl children need to be married off early, as they are a burden. This mindset leads to young girls becoming early mothers and carrying children instead of books.

She warned that the people conducting child marriage and all others who attend the event would be booked for the crime. She also said that there was a chance of imprisonment for two years and fine up to one lakh would be imposed on the members of the families engaging in the crime.

Legal Services Authority member Adabala Ratna Prasad presided over the meeting while the residents of Ramanayya Peta have participated in the legal awareness programme.
