Kakinada: Trend analysis of road accidents is required for prevention and to undertake further preventive steps, said District Collector Kartikeya Mishra here on Wednesday.

While addressing the District Level Road Safety Meeting at the Collectorate, he said that this would help for reducing the road accidents and directed the officials to analyse the road accidents stretch wise and accident-prone areas from January onwards in the district.

He also directed them to concentrate on other areas to prevent the road accidents. Mishra expressed his regret and astonishment over the 60 accident deaths that were occurred in the district during February alone. He suggested the officials that this rate of accident deaths should immediately need a drastic reduction and directed the police and transport department officials to enforce road safety rules strictly without any deviation.

He also directed them to register cases, cancel licenses for violation of road rules like over speeding, rash driving and drunken driving. He suggested the officials that they should take measures like imposition of fine and cancellation of licenses etc.

While speaking on drunken driving, the Collector suggested that naming and shaming of the offenders should be done through the media or other means of publicity as a preventive measure. He also said that counselling of family members on the safety of the individuals and other commuters were important.

He also directed the national highway authorities to take immediate steps for road safety measures on Kakinada –Amalapuram road, where the widening works were going on. While reviewing on road safety in the agency, the Collector suggested the officials to control heavy vehicles which have more than 10 tyres on the ghat road between Rampachodavaram and Chintoor.

Construction of traffic island at Gaman bridge road at Diwan Cheruvu traffic junction and preparation of estimates for traffic signals improvements in Kakinada and Rajamahendravaram cities were also suggested by the Collector.

He also directed the R&B officials to improve junctions and to take preventive steps at black spots which were identified.
