Vijayawada: The city wore a festive look after a long gap owing to auspicious season for celebrations and wedding ceremonies, beating the hot sun. About 500 plus marriages are scheduled to be performed across the city and outskirts until the end of April. The auspicious ‘muhurat’ are favoring to couples as well as the parents who are bothered about delay of marriages to their children as Krishna Pushkaralu are fast approaching.

There are no ‘muhurat’ that are suitable to perform a marriage until another 6 to 8 months. The month of April is a relief for men and women who want to get hitched. Purohits (priests who perform the wedding ceremony) are hands full of work and are pretty much in demand along with the convention centers and Kalyana Mandapam or function halls in the city.

About 60 function halls are present in and around the city which are of a decent class. Lack of affordable convention centres has emerged a big problem for the majority of people who are looking out for alternative one. The function halls are, however, costing a bomb for the ones who dared. The minimum rental for 12 hours (Standard) is varying from Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh excluding all other amenities.

Though hotels offer the package deal that is economically viable, they are unable to meet the demand. Dasari Priyanka soon to be bride said, “The ‘muhurat’ is fixed at 9.45 pm on April 20 and we did not finalise on the backdrop of the dais. But, another party which is going to perform a wedding on the morning of April 21 had decided on it and in order to make it simple and hassle-free, we also okayed the same backdrop solving a problem for both weddings.”

Even the star hotels and community halls were all booked leaving no scope for the last minute finalisers to perform the celebration. With no more good times in near months to perform occasions, most of them preferred to slide along the stream. One can witness a frenzy at places like flower market, shopping areas like M G Road, Besant Road and One Town besides the jewelry shops, which opened their shutters after a break of nearly three weeks.

Giving the demand, price for the yellow metal and silver have gone up instantly. The saloons and spa service centers, boutiques, shopping centers and tailoring units in the city have shrugged their shoulders for any further commitments.
