Vijayawada: Displaced families of inner ring road at Ramavarappadu ring circle are facing many problems at the new houses allotted to them in YSR Jakkampudi Colony due to lack of basic amenities like power and drinking water. As part of the inner ring road widening works, the officials have removed houses of 350 families living along the national highway at Ramavarappadu.

The highway will be connected to inner ring road, which connects the Hyderabad-Kolkata highway near Ramavarappadu ring road. The officials needed land along the national highway for inner ring road and removed the encroachments along the highway. Recently, they allotted houses at YSR Jakkampudi Colony. The residents are alleging that they were not given sufficient time to shift the houses.

However, the issue of removal of encroachments has been going on for several weeks. Finally, the officials removed the encroachments on Tuesday. Prior to removal, they issued notices to the families to vacate their homes. Nearly, 100 families were shifted to Jakkampudi Colony with their belongings on the outskirts of the city. They were allotted houses in the block numbers 20 to 40.

But, these blocks have neither drinking water supply nor electricity. These poor families, particularly the children and elderly people, are facing many problems due to lack of power. The VMC is supplying drinking water to the colony through water tankers. But, the tankers are insufficient to the existing 15,000 population. Nearly 6,000 houses were built at Jakkampudi Colony.

Out of which, 2,000 houses are yet to be allotted. Ramavarappadu residents were allotted houses in these blocks, which have no facilities. In this backdrop, the officials have allotted houses for another 350 families, which lived in Ramavarappadu. An elderly man Guruva Reddy (name changed) said: “I am selling vegetables at Ramavarappadu and staying there for more than 20 years.

I was forced to vacate the house at Ramavarappadu due to construction of the inner ring road”. The elderly man is worried how to get livelihood in the colony, which is new for him. K Rajesh, a barber said, “I am facing many problems due to lack of water facility in the new house”. He said the family members were spending two hours a day to get water for daily consumption.

He further stated that the children could not sleep for two days due to mosquito menace and lack of power. He said it would take some months to restart their life. He said he lost his livelihood at Ramavarappadu and restart his life and search for livelihood. Keeping in view Pushkaralu, the government is keen on completing the inner ring road works and start the bridge for movement of traffic that connect Gollapudi- Ramavarappadu ring road, which is part of the Hyderabad-Kolkata national highway.

V Srinivas, Assistant Engineer, Vijayawada Municipal Corporation authorities said that the staff started wiring and electricity would be provided soon. He said the civic body was supplying drinking water to the residents through tankers and added that water taps would be arranged soon.
