The failure of getting any firm assurance on separate railway zone and special status may foil the chances of  Telugu Desam Party winning the Greater Visakhapatnam Corporation elections which could be held towards August end or during the first week of  September.

Visakhapatnam: The failure of getting any firm assurance on separate railway zone and special status may foil the chances of Telugu Desam Party winning the Greater Visakhapatnam Corporation elections which could be held towards August end or during the first week of September.

Added to these two issues, the non-starter of several mega projects also hamper the prospects of the ruling party. Except for the launching of IIM classes, the ruling party has nothing in its kitty to appease the voters. Rs 36,000 crore Eros Entertainment Project was shelved and the much talked Signature Tower is also on the verge of being put into cold storage.

However, the last two days development and the popularity of YSRCP local leader Gudivada Amarnath has sent jitters down the spines of TD leaders. “The TD leaders realised that as the days were passing Amarnath was getting more and more support of the people. Hence, they demolished the hunger strike camp and sent Amarnath to KGH”, said former corporator and YSRCP leader Koyya Prasad Reddy.

The fast was launched at a time when local TD leaders sent positive signals to the Chief Minister stating that the party would win elections hands down if held in August or September. They drew a road map and asked the party president Chandrababu Naidu to convene a meeting of the party leaders and local MLAs towards end of this month to which Naidu had agreed.

The Chief Minister also asked the VUDA, GVMC and other departments to complete pending projects and prepare for stone laying ceremonies for next two months. Naidu earlier announced regularisation of encroached government lands up to 100 square yards and likely to complete the pending Simchalam and Gajuwaka lands issue.

The housing applications for 20,000 dwellings are also put on fast track and the district administration has invited applications for new ration cards. “We are also streamlining all the welfare schemes like old age pensions some of which remained stuck due to faulty system”, said a senior official who told this correspondent that he received orders from top to bring the pensions in operational mode.

Meanwhile, the BJP leaders are trying to seize the opportunity to demand for more wards as they realised that TDP would get a battering at the elections.
