Hyderabad: The State government is mulling over forming four more urban development authorities with adequate potentialities of Urban-Centric Economic Growth (UCEG). As part of this move, Nellore, Kurnool, Rajahmundry-Kakinada and Anantapur-Hindupur would be turned to new urban development authorities.

According to 2011 census, Anantapur, Kakinada, Kadapa, Tirupati, Rajahmundry, Kurnool, Nellore, Guntur, Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam emerged as the top ten urban populated places in the State.

As per the urban population growth trends assessed by the State government, Kakinada, Rajahmundry, Tirupati, Kadapa, Guntur, Kurnool, Nellore, Vijayawada, Amravati and Visakhapatnam have been identified as the top ten urban populated local bodies in the State by 2029.

Considering the rapid trend of urbanisation and migration of people from rural places to here in future, the State government has to employ new economic measures based on primary economic activity, nature of urban centres and feasibility of satellite growth.

Moreover, assessments have also been made in terms of potential economic activity for development of centres for UCEG taking into consideration areas like services, manufacturing, industrial and tourism, etc. Speaking to The Hans India, an MA&UD official said,

“While employing the economic interventions, the Municipal Administration and Urban Development department shall take into account the nature of urban local bodies, potentialities for urbanisation, spatial extent required for urban development and possibility of jurisdictional expansion.” To expand the existing jurisdiction, present areas of the four urban local bodies have to be extended.

Except Kurnool, it was proposed to merge three Gram Panchayats adjacent to Nellore to form Nellore Urban Development Authority (NUDA). In East Godavari district, 12 Gram Panchayats were proposed to be merged to form the Rajahmundry-Kakinada Urban Development Authority (RKUDA) and 4 Gram Panchayats to form the Anantapur-Hindupur Urban Development Authority (AHUDA), the sources said.

The agenda was to accelerate planned development in these places. Otherwise, it would be difficult to meet the basic needs of the migrated population. The State government interventions were planned accordingly as per the Schedule XII of the Constitution. The mandate includes provision of supplying proper drinking water, facilities of sanitation, sewerage, storm water drainage, solid waste management, urban transport and green spaces.
