Tirupati: The tallest idol in the country of Lord Venkateswara of 24 feet is getting ready in Mangalam area, near here, since four months. It is to be unveiled in the second week of August at Brundavan in Uttar Pradesh. A stapati, Penchal Prasad, who is giving shape to the idol, provides a means of livelihood to several artisans involved in finishing this task.

He has been making idols for some prominent temples in the country, besides the Tirumala-Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD). He is giving finishing touches to the tallest Venkanna idol being identified as ‘Sankarsana Venkateswara, which is one of the 24 forms the Lord assumes.

Prasad’s brother told The Hans India that the stapathis involved in giving a clear shape to the idol are taking care in using the specially brought stone from Tamil Nadu. They have been working during the last four months 24 X 7 to complete the task.

The idols of Lord Hanuman, Garuthmanthudu and Narayanamurthy installed near the Alipiri tollgate have been made in the same area of Mangalam. Stapatis here have given shape to idols of Lord Srirama, and Venkateswara, Goddess Lakshmi Devi, besides other idols and arches.

Two huge idols of Ramanujacharya and Nandiswara are getting ready for installation at Badrinath (in Uttarakhand) and Mahanandi shrine in Kurnool district. The stapatis told The Hans India that although they get TTD assistance, if the state government extends benefits they could revive the declining art (shilpakala) of making idols.
