Srikakulam: Hopes of good kharif cultivation among the farming community in the district have been receding in the absence of a good monsoon and the water levels in major reservoirs down to alarming levels.Poor monsoon so far has affected cultivation across the district with sowing of paddy taking place in 90,000 hectares against 2.13 lakh hectares normal coverage for the period.

Speaking to The Hans India, Agriculture joint director G Rama Rao said, “The position of sown crops is not very encouraging due to the dry spell.” He said that a meeting with irrigation officials would be conducted to chalk out an action plan.

In spite of the meteorological department’s efforts to keep up the spirit of farmers by assuring about revival of monsoon, the farming community, which is already put to hardships in mobilisation of inputs such as credit, seed and fertiliser, remains a worried lot due to the extended dry spell. As a result, sowing of crops has been less than half the normal coverage for the period in several parts of the district.

Farmers in Srikakulam rural, Rajam, Narasannapeta and Jalumuru mandals in the district have sown the seed with the hope that rains will occur in due course,” Thotapalli ayucut development committee chairman Nimmaka Panduranga said.

Severe shortage of water in reservoirs is making the farmers, struggle even to raise paddy nurseries. Paddy transplantation has taken place only in 40,000 ha against the normal coverage of 83,000 ha for the period.

Sowing of paddy, maize and groundnut crops will pick up in the district after a couple of good rains,” an agriculture official said, striking a hopeful note. According to Vamsadara circle, SE, Bhojaraju Appala Naidu, the water level in Gotta Barrage across Vamsadhara River has dipped to 0.52 tmcft as against 0.662 tmcft.

Thotapalli SE Dola Tirumala Rao said, “The water level in Thotapalli reservoir across Nagavali River has dipped to 1.58 tmcft as against 2.51 tmcft.” He said that there is an imminent need to link Nagavali with Vamsadhara to tackle drought-like situation in the district. He also stressed the need for constructing reservoirs, tanks and check dams in the larger interests of the farmers.

AP Rythu Sangham president Budithi Appal Naidu said the government has failed to complete the construction of a reservoir across Vamsadhara river at Hiramandal, off-shore reservoir across Mahendratanaya river at Chapara and other mini projects.
