Rekhapalli (East Godavari): Director, Agricultural and Social Development Society (ASDS), V Gandhi Babu received the prestigious Mother Teresa Service award from Healthcare International Organisation, Hyderabad in a function held at Sri Potti Sriramulu Telugu University, Hyderabad.

Gandhi Babu was selected for his services to enhance the educational and healthcare standards of tribals for the last 10 years. Following a survey, ASDS had admitted 3,003 tribal children into ‘nutrition’ and ‘rehabilitation’ centres, in VR Puram mandal in East Godavari district.

In accordance with NHRM guidelines, it screened 291 children in 12 tribal habitats and provided treatment to 221 children suffering from various diseases. It also identified 316 pregnant women and made 196 of them give birth at hospitals apart from vaccinating 236 children below the age of two.

ASDS treated 5478 tribals through its own mobile unit by conducting 89 medical camps and also treated 8616 tribals in adivasi habitats with the cooperation of the government. It referred 157 cases of emergency and performed transfusion in 132 tribal children whose HB percent was less than 70 percent. It provided water facilities to 60 tribal habitats by setting up 60 hand-pumps and 10 wells.
