Telugu Language Day was celebrated at Sri Durga Malleswara Siddhartha Mahila Kalasala in the city on Monday. Presiding over a programme held to mark the occasion, college principal T Vijayalakshmi paid rich tributes to Gidugu Venkata Ramamurthy, father of spoken Telugu language movement, whose birth anniversary is celebrated as Telugu Language Day.

Presiding over a programme held to mark the occasion, college principal T Vijayalakshmi paid rich tributes to Gidugu Venkata Ramamurthy, father of spoken Telugu language movement, whose birth anniversary is celebrated as Telugu Language Day.

She exhorted students to develop a passion for their mother tongue Telugu and strive to promote the classical language in a big way. Eminent poet Valiveti Venkata Sivaramakrishna Murthy who attended the programme as a chief guest, lauded the endeavour of Gidugu Ramamurthy to make Telugu more comprehensible to the common man by laying greater emphasis on spoken language. Head of Department of Telugu A Nagajyothi, faculty members K Sarala, I Manjula and others were present.

The Telugu Language Day celebrations were also held at PB Siddhartha College of Arts and Science. Metta Venkateswara Rao, former HoD of Telugu of Andhra Loyola College, who participated in the celebrations, highlighted the greatness of the Telugu language. College principal Meka Ramesh presided. Telugu HoD Y Vijayananda Raju, faculty member Yasoda Purnachandra Rao, Siddhartha Academy administrative officer T Ramesh and others participated in the celebrations.
