Following the pressure mounted on the Centre by the State government demanding Special Category Status, the Central government has come forward to offer special financial package and to bear the total cost of Polavaram project. With this the project has gained prominence. Once the project materialises, it will boost the economy of the State and help supply water to parched areas of Rayalaseema region.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is keen on completing the first phase of theproject by 2018. As part of it he spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting for early release of funds for speedy completion of the project by placing it on fast track. The CM inaugurated a German rock excavator to speed up earth works of spill way on September 13. He said that the State already spent Rs 1800 cr on Polavaram project so far.

The Chief Minister, who visited the project site 13 times so far decided to visit the project on fourth Monday of every month till the completion to speed up works. Besides, he is conducting virtual monitoring on the progress of works using drone cameras and interacting with project engineers using fibrenet connectivity from command control room in Vijayawada.

It may be noted that the State government got a credit of first state in river linking by linking Godavari-Krishna Rivers by commissioning Pattiseema lift irrigation project and diverting Godavari water to Krishna through Polavaram right main canal. The diversion of Godavari water helped to stabilise the Krishna delta ayacut in Krishna, Guntur and West Godavari districts and the government is able to save crops worth Rs 2,500 crore even under drought conditions.

The Polavaram mega project is designed with earth cum rock fill dam of 2454 metre spill way in right flank with 1128.40 metre and flood discharge of 1.02 lakh cusecs. The cropping pattern under the project is aimed to benefit 11 lakh acres including six lakh acres under right main canal covering West Godavari and Krishna and five lakh acres under left main canal covering East Godavari and Visakhapatnam districts in addition to 3,100 million units power generation.

The project aims to supply of 23.44 tmc ft of water to Visakhapatnam, steel plant and several other industrial units of Visakhapatnam benefiting several villages enroute Visakhapatnam. The State government is making efforts to provide R&R package to 222 submergence villages including 44,574 families in Andhra Pradesh. The cost of the project is estimated at Rs 16,010.45 crore as per 2010-11 prices.
