This is for the second time Port Blair bound the vessel got struck on its way. On May 18 mv Swaraj Dweep remained in the docks after passengers embarkment as the captain refused to sail due to bad weather. The passengers were struck in the ship for three days.

Traffic manager of the Visakhapatnam Port Trust G Jaydev Vandanam said Harshavardhan sailed out of the Port at about 1.15 pm on Tuesday and after travelling for 14 nautical miles, one of the four generators developed a snag. The ship captain informed the management of Shipping Corporation of India, the owner of the vessel and they advised him to stop the vessel for a while.

We offered them help but the ship crew said their technicians would rectify the snag. A vessel from Indian Navy also went close and offered help. Finally the generator was rectified and while it was about to move, another generator developed trouble,’’ the traffic manager said. The departure time was set at 2 pm but it was later changed to 7 pm. Sources in the Port said the vessel might be brought back to Visakhapatnam Port to avoid a risk.

Joint collector J Niwas said the district administration had discussed the matter with the port authorities and there was no problem for the ship or the passengers. He said the technical staff are attending to the problem and it would be soon rectified.

But uncertainty of sailing has put the passengers on tenterhooks. The previous incident is still fresh in the memory of the passengers as they had to struggle for the food in the ship canteen. An NGO, and a shipping company promoter served free food to the 1500 odd passengers who were struck in the vessel.
