Amaravati: The Guntur Municipal Corporation for the first time in the State will introduce uninterrupted drinking water supply in the city from December. The municipal corporation has taken up comprehensive drinking water scheme at a cost of Rs 460 crore under the Amrut Scheme with the World Bank financial assistance to meet drinking water needs of the people for the next 20 years in the city which is expected to be completed by December this year.

The GMC will provide tap connections to all the houses in the city to get more revenue through drinking water charges. For this purpose, it will give new tap connections within the purview of eight drinking water reservoirs in the city soon and issued a notification to provide new tap connections.
For this purpose, the GMC is conducting Tap Melas from October 21 to 27 and it will receive applications to get tap connections under the 24x7 drinking water scheme at eight reservoirs in the city. The house owners willing to have drinking water round-the-clock have to apply with tax payment receipts, Aadhaar proof and ration card.

The GMC will give tap connections under 24x7 drinking water scheme and it will fix water metres to taps and depending upon the water consumption it will collect water charges from the consumers. GMC deputy executive engineer (Projects) D Santh Raj said, "As soon as comprehensive drinking water scheme work is completed, we will provide 24x7 water supply. Initially, we will provide tap connections to all the houses in the city.

Later, we will fix the metres to the taps, it will take some more time. We have already submitted the proposal to take up another drinking water scheme at a cost of Rs 129 crore with the World Bank aid and submitted the DPR to the government. . The GMC instructed the contractor to complete the comprehensive drinking water scheme works by December”.

GMC commissioner S Nagalakshmi said, "As soon as comprehensive drinking water scheme is completed, we will provide 24x7 drinking water to the residents in the city. We are conducting Tap Meals from Friday to provide new tap connections to all the houses. The GMC will able to check wastage of drinking water".
