AgriGold case: AP govt asked to spell out steps to protect depositors
The High Court at Hyderabad has directed the Andhra Pradesh government to file a memo enumerating what steps it would take to protect the interests of AgriGold depositors and agents in the nearly Rs 7,000 crore scam.
Hyderabad: The High Court at Hyderabad has directed the Andhra Pradesh government to file a memo enumerating what steps it would take to protect the interests of AgriGold depositors and agents in the nearly Rs 7,000 crore scam.
A division bench of the High Court comprising Justice V Ramasubramanian and Justice S V Bhatt gave this order on Monday during the course of the hearing of a PIL filed by Telangana Agrigold Depositors and Agents Welfare Association.
The bench gave these orders when the counsel for the petitioner informed that the CID chief in Andhra Pradesh had been repeatedly making statements in public that the Public Interest Litigation filed on this issue was coming in the way of providing relief to the depositors.
The counsel also said that may be the Andhra Pradesh government was planning to allocate a lump sum amount of Rs 500 crore to meet the requirements of depositors as was done by Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal in the case of Sharada chit fund scam.
The bench asked special government pleader Krishna Prasad to present the government’s response in the matter. Counsel for the Committee appointed by the High Court to oversee the auction of properties Ravi Prasad sought extension of time for registration of sale deeds to successful bidders till November 19.
He informed the bench that the third phase of auction of properties had been completed and payments for service providers has yet to be made.
The counsel for AgriGold company, L Ravichander, senior advocate, presented a cheque of Rs 5 lakh towards payments for service providers as directed by the court. The matter has been adjourned to Thursday.
