Atmakuru (Kurnool): A toll tax of Rs 50 from heavy vehicles and Rs 20 from light vehicles is being collected from Monday for the maintenance of ecology. The Forest department has set up a toll gate at Byrlooty range check-post in the Nallamala forest area. The state government has issued an order (GO 56) to this effect.

Recently, the National Highways Authority of India converted the Kurnool-Amaravati road into national highway. The move to collect toll tax was initiated as the 60-km-long road from Atmakuru in the district to Pedda Dornala in Prakasam district would come under the Nagarjunasagar-Srisailam Tiger Reserve (NSTR).

The toll amount so collected would be used as the tiger conservation fund.Speaking to The Hans India, Byrlooty in-charge Ranger Raghunadha Reddy said that the earnings from the toll gate would be used for wildlife and ecological conservation. Since thousands of vehicles commute to Andhra Pradesh state, Kurnool district and to Vijayawada, the earnings from toll tax would become a huge sum. As computerised billing machines are yet to be installed, it is feared that the personnel at the toll gate might resort to irregularities while issuing manual bills.
