Vijayawada: The spat between the ruling TDP and the YSRC brings under the spotlight the State-funded Arogyasri scheme, aimed at extending a better access to quality health services for the below poverty line (BPL) families.

The YSRC workers staged demonstrations at the collectorates all over the State on Friday even as its president YS Jaganmohan Reddy launched a broadside against the government for “diluting” the scheme which was introduced by his father late YS Rajasekhar Reddy.

The scheme used to receive an annual allocation of Rs 910 crore for coverage of 938 ailments in the undivided State as identified by the government.

Each person suffering from any of the identified ailments is entitled to receive Rs 2 lakh under the scheme so as to get treatment from any of the designated network of health service providers.

It was renamed as NTR Health Services after the TDP came to power in 2014. The TDP government included 100 more ailments in the list of ailments in addition to the existing 930. Arogyasri continued to be a flagship programme regardless of change of governments.

The YSRC accuses the TDP government of whittling down the very objective of the scheme by downsizing the allocation of funds.

Former Minister and YSRC Krishna district president K Pardhasaradhi, who led a protest in the city, said the scheme ought to have received more funds after inclusion of 100 ailments.

Medical and Health Minister Kamineni Srinivas refuted the charge of the YSRC, claiming that the TDP government had extended access for the poor to health services much better than the previous Congress regime.
