P Anil a 30-year old young man has been suffering from obesity for many years and tried many methods like exercises, maintaining diet and other means to get the rid of his excess weight. As the attempts grossly failed to yield the results, he had finally undergone Vertical sleeve Gastrectomy surgery to get weight loss in Vijayawada. Anil, the native of Guntur, had been suffering many problems due to him being over up to 140 kgs.

“During the last few years my weight increased from 95 kgs to 140 kgs making my daily life very difficult,” said Anil. He recently consulted Dr Nandakishore Dukkipati of Livlife Hospitals, Suryaraopet in Vijayawada. After conducting some basic tests, the Doctor had suggested for Anil to undergo Sleeve Gastrectomy surgery to get rid of his obesity.

Anil is an autorikshaw driver by profession and could not perform his day to day work due to his obesity. He also worried that he is prone to deseases like Diabetes, BP and Cardiac problems due to the obesity. Anil had undergone Sleeve Gastrectomy surgery on Tuesday and will be discharged in two days.

“The main objective of Sleeve Gastrectomy surgery is to reduce the size of the stomach so that he can take less food and does not feel hunger even though the intake comes down,” said Dr Nandakishore Dukkipati, who is an expert in doing such surgeries in Vijayawada.

He further said after performing the surgery that the new stomach is about the size of a banana and it limits the amount of food the person can take in daily life. The surgery will be performed with two to five small cuts (incisions) in the belly and scope and instruments are used to perform it. A camera is connected to monitor the operating room and it will allow the surgeon to view the insides of the belly while doing the operation.

The surgery takes 60 to 90 minutes. The new stomach will be stitched properly and utmost care to avoid leakage of food. The doctor said “We test the belly by pumping air after the surgery as part of the test,” he added.

In case complications arise in future after surgery we can detect the problems with the help of Xray or other tests said the doctor. Dr Nandakishore said Anil could restart his daily work after taking rest for 10 to 15 days and the impact of the weight loss will be visible in six months as intake of food will come down gradually.
