Bhadradri gets green nod

The plant is one of the nine thermal power projects which the state government has proposed to set up using sub-critical thermal general technology.
The project has been put on hold for the last two years as it faced hurdles from the National Green Tribunal. Perhaps, the Bhadradri project would be the last thermal project to be set up using the sub-critical technology in the state.
The Experts Appraisal Committee (EAC) of the ministry gave its nod to set up the plant at the meeting presided over by the Union ministry in New Delhi on Friday.
Top officials of the state Energy department said the government had convinced the committee on the environmental aspects following objections raised by the NGT on the establishment of the plant at Manuguru in Bhadradri-Kothgudem district.
The tribunal strongly objected to the use of sub-critical technology initially but following the request by Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, the Centre gave exemption for the project. The government had convinced the Centre regarding the fact that the project had been taken up about 12 years ago in the undivided Andhra Pradesh.
Officials said the ministry would issue official notification granting permission to the project within a week.
Sources said the state government would now speed up the works from this month. Out of the Rs 7,300 crore estimated cost of the project, Rs 1,020 crore has already been spent on project works being executed by BHEL.
Land acquisition from reserve forests and farm lands for the project would be completed at the earliest.
