Farmer, son hurt in their protest against power line
A farmer and his son sustained critical injuries when they resisted the 220 KV high-tension power line works across their farm by hanging to the cables in Molavai village of Madakasira mandal in Anantapur on Saturday.
Madakasira: A farmer and his son sustained critical injuries when they resisted the 220 KV high-tension power line works across their farm by hanging to the cables in Molavai village of Madakasira mandal in Anantapur on Saturday. The contractor and his workmen were accused of being inhuman to the plight of the farmer and son duo.
The injured were identified as Subhaan Saab (60) and his son Nabi Rasool (35). They were given first aid at the local hospital. The locals have demanded the governments of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka to pay compensation to them. In fact, the duo protested to get the works stalled since no compensation was paid to them. A 60-km-long 220 KV HT power line is being laid from Madhugiri to Pavagada in Karnataka.
The power line also passes through for a distance of 20 km in several villages of Madakasira mandal of Anantapur district. The works are being executed under the supervision of the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation. Rules stipulate that the works should be taken up only after paying compensation to the affected farmers.
According to locals, authorities are paying a compensation of Rs 4 to Rs 5 lakh for each tower installed in the farm. But, Subhaan has been paid only Rs 40,000 and there was no clarity when the rest of the compensation would be paid to them.
On Saturday evening, Subhaan along with his son urged the contractor executing the works to go ahead with the works only after paying him the full compensation. The contractor and his workers did not pay heed to them. The farmers threatened the contractor to commit suicide by hanging by means of the electric cables being laid.
The workers went ahead with the cable laying works paying scant attention to the farmers who have been hanging at a height of 20 feet. When the tired Subhaan cried for help, the workers were amused but they did not go to his rescue. Later, the power cable by means of which his son Nabirasool was hanging was elevated further.
First Subhaan fell to the ground. Later, his son followed suit as they grew weak. Nabirasool got his waist and legs fractured because of the fall, while his father sustained injuries on his eyes and waist.
