Vijayawada: Sanitation works were caught in a mess at Pavitra Sangamam where the prestigious National Women Parliament conclave is being held by Sate government as Vijayawada Municipal as Corporation (VMC) failed in procuring adequate workers for sanitation work.

Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development P Narayana expressed dissatisfaction over the poor maintenance of toilets during his inspection at conclave on Saturday.

About 80 toilets were arranged at the conclave for about 12,000 women delegates on Friday. Due to insufficient toilets, the women delegates were forced to use the toilets which were arranged for men. Many women have expressed displeasure over the poor maintenance at one of the biggest prestigious events conducted in the city in recent years.

The irony was the agency which got the contract for maintenance of hygiene failed to fulfill its duties on the very first day.

Following the complaints, Minister Narayana personally inspected sanitation conditions on Saturday and expressed dissatisfaction over the failure of contract agencies.

He also announced that the number of toilets has been increased to 300 on Saturday. On the other hand, the contract agencies failed to supply workers for other sanitation works as per their agreement. According to Chief Medical Officer (CMOH), of VMC, Dr M Gopi Naik, tenders were invited for procuring 1,865 sanitation workers for the work.

Two agencies have an agreement to supply 1,300 workers. The VMC on Friday afternoon hurriedly shifted hundreds of its sanitation workers from Vijayawada city to Pavitra Sangamam as the agencies were unsuccessful in procuring workers. Garbage piled up in some areas in the city as workers were shifted to Pavitra Sangamam.
