Vijayawada: Residents of KT road from Chittinagar Junction to Milk Project are spending sleepless nights over the impending widening of the road. While 70 residents near Milk Project received notices from the town planning department of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation, a few of them approached the court to stop demolition of their houses. The residents term the move to widen the existing 80 feet road to 100 feet as ridiculous as Karl Marx Road (Eluru Road), which is known for heavy rush of vehicles, is only 80 feet from Vijaya Talkies to Apsara Cinema.

The residents formed a Coordination Committee. Committee convener DV Ramana Babu told The Hans India that though no accident or death occurred on the road since diversion of traffic coming from Gollapudi side to accommodate construction of Durga temple flyover, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation is keen to widen the road being used for traffic diversion for another six months.

“After the construction of the flyover and Inner Ring Road, there will be no need for diversion and the existing 80 feet road would be enough to meet the traffic needs of the future. It will be good for the authorities to wait until the flyover construction is over to make next move on extension,” he advised.

Ramakrishna, a resident of the locality, said encroachments were the main problem on the road. Even the shops and other commercial units had encroached the road making it more congested, he complained. The road measures different widths at different places because of the encroachments, he added.

A few weeks ago, the commissioner of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation inspected the area and ruled out change in the master plan and reiterated that the road should be expanded to 100 feet. Following this, residents of Division Nos 30, 31 and 33 which fall under the expansion plan have been worrying. All the three divisions are under the rule of TDP corporators.

The residents are confused as corporator Gurram Kanaka Durga, chairperson of People’s Complaints Committee in the VMC three weeks ago represented to Minister for Irrigation Devineni Uma stating that to adjust the width to 90 feet keeping in mind the livelihood of petty vendors who settled on the road.
