Amaravati: As is his usual wont, TDP president and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu seemingly has chosen to keep cards close to his chest over the elevation of his son Lokesh as minister for a few more days. According to sources, Naidu reserved his decision on the issue even as the politburo members in unison requested him to consider Lokesh as a candidate for MLC (MLA quota) elections at a meeting held at his
residence in Vundavalli on Sunday.
The party AP state unit president K Kala Venkata Rao was said to have recommended the young leader’s name first only to be followed by the other members from both AP and Telangana en masse. High drama marked the major development in the meeting even as Naidu, pausing for a while, indicated his mood in favour of considering the candidatures of leaders with proven track record in terms of commitment and loyalty to the party as MLC candidates.
However, the politburo members left the selection of the MLC candidates to Naidu’s discretion. This means the suspense over the elevation of Lokesh may have to continue till the last day for filing of nominations for the MLC (MLA quota) elections scheduled on March 7. Given the hints made available by Naidu himself during interactions with the party leaders from Telangana a few days ago, Lokesh anointment as a minister appears to be a formality.
For this, he will have to step into the Legislative Council for which the politburo members did some spadework in his favour by proposing his name. The party rank and file has been setting the tone for Lokesh elevation for the last few months by staging demonstrations and even senior leaders and ministers too joined the mission, vying one another to please the top brass.
The politburo meeting which was attended by party state president Kala Venkatarao, Kalva Srinivasulu, Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy, Nandamuri Harikrishna, Ravula Chandrasekhar Reddy(Telangana) and others has debated on implementing unemployment allowance to the jobless youth, Anna Canteens at all municipalities, the need for centre for the implementation of three tier system in Panchayat Raj, besides candidates for MLC elections. It has endorsed the decision of the Centre for conducting simultaneous elections for both Assemblies and Parliament.
