Vijayawada: With mercury levels soaring and crossing 40 degree Celsius, middle class and the poor are making arrangements to beat the heat. Most of them rely on desi air coolers to overcome the heat.

The poor and middle class families prefer to go with coolers as the air conditioners (ACs). With AC, common man incurs huge power bill, coupled with ever-increasing power tariff, it has been out of their reach.

With the onset of summer, the air cooler sales will begin, however, this year the business was on a dull note.

Speaking to The Hans India Kasi Viswanath, in-charge of Sai Ram Polymers, an air cooler manufacturing company, at Autonagar admitted that cooler manufacturing business is a seasonal business. “The cooler sales purely depend on the weather condition and would last hardly for three to four months depending on the monsoon arrival,” he noted.

His unit manufactures about six varieties of coolers-- big, small and mini-- for offices, house, and for huge halls, depending on sizes.

“This year, the sales are yet to pick up. The company is giving employment to about 40 workers. A few workers are permanent and others are temporary. There are workers who work on a daily basis. The manufacturing unit works three shifts a day during peak seasons,” he informed.

He said that they had sold about 50,000 units last year and were expecting to improve sales this year. He said that there was a stiff competition in sales.
