New Delhi: Drawing the attention of the House to the suicides of weavers in general and in Kurnool in particular, which has a population of two lakh weavers, YSRCP MP B Renuka, said here on Thursday that the basic reason for the suicides was poverty and denial of remunerative prices.

“There was a necessity to include handloom sector under MNREGA as members from the weaving community were turning into casual labour leaving their cherished profession,” she said. There was also a need to entrust marketing of handloom products to National Textile Corporation so that these products could be marketed throughout the country.

She urged the Government to introduce house-cum-work shed scheme for the handloom weavers. Further, they should be encouraged to use modern equipment; she added seeking the Prime Minister’s intervention in devising necessary schemes for the weavers.
